A Thousand Times Rarer Than Diamond

Tanzanite is a variety of the mineral zoisite, and it exists in only one place on earth — a small mining area near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Discovered in 1967, it was named by Tiffany & Co., who recognized immediately that they had something extraordinary: a gemstone with a violet-blue unlike anything else in the world.

What makes tanzanite remarkable is its trichroism — the ability to show three different colors depending on the viewing angle: blue, violet, and burgundy. The finest stones display a deep, saturated violet-blue that rivals the best sapphires, but with a warmth and intensity entirely its own. Because the deposit is geologically unique and finite, tanzanite is considered a thousand times rarer than diamond.

At Hemmingmoore's, every tanzanite we carry is natural and genuine — never synthetic, never misrepresented. We offer loose natural tanzanites in a range of cuts and sizes, individually selected for color and clarity. A stone this rare deserves to be the real thing.
