The Great Impostor — Finally in Its Own Light

History's Hidden Gem

For centuries, the world's most famous "rubies" were actually spinel. The Black Prince's Ruby in the British Imperial Crown? Spinel. The Timur Ruby? Spinel. It wasn't until modern gemology that spinel was recognized as its own mineral — and today, collectors and connoisseurs prize it not despite that history, but because of it. Natural spinel is genuinely rare, naturally vivid, and almost never treated.

Spinel's color range is extraordinary. From the legendary vivid reds and hot pinks of Myanmar's Mogok Valley — sometimes called "Jedi" spinels for their electric glow — to the neon pinks of Tanzania's Mahenge plateau, the cobalt blues of Vietnam, and the soft lavenders of Sri Lanka. Unlike many colored stones, natural spinel achieves these colors without any heat treatment or enhancement whatsoever.

At Hemmingmoore, every spinel we offer is 100% natural — no synthetics, no treatments, no enhancements. Spinel is one of the few gemstones that almost never needs them, and we intend to keep it that way. We carry loose natural spinels in a range of colors and sizes, plus select original spinel jewelry. For those who know what they're looking at — and for those who are about to find out.
