America's Own Precious Gemstone

Born in Big Sky Country

Montana sapphire is one of the world's great gemstone stories — a precious corundum found in the remote river gravels and ancient volcanic deposits of the American West. The most celebrated source is Yogo Gulch in central Montana, the only primary sapphire deposit in the state and one of the few anywhere that produces stones requiring absolutely no heat treatment to achieve their vivid, saturated blue.

That matters. The vast majority of the world's sapphires are heat-treated to improve color and clarity. Yogo sapphires come out of the ground with a naturally intense cornflower blue to violet hue and exceptional clarity — a virtual guarantee of their untreated nature, and a distinction recognized by gemologists worldwide. Additional deposits at Rock Creek, the Missouri River, and Dry Cottonwood Creek produce a broader palette of natural colors including green, yellow, pink, and orange.

At Hemmingmoore's, every Montana sapphire we offer is natural and untreated — never synthetic, never enhanced. These are genuine American gemstones with a character all their own. We carry loose Montana sapphires — rough, faceted, and cabochon — alongside select original sapphire jewelry. For collectors and anyone who appreciates the real thing.
